How to Improve your Garden with Lawn Edging

When it comes to interior and garden design, you might have noticed that the devil is, indeed, in the details. If you are planning a do-over for your patio, you may be unsure of where to start.

Even if your garden is of mid to large size, you’ll surely notice that space management is crucial to making your patio equally pleasant, tidy, and functional.

Are you picturing neatly defined areas for your outdoor space? The answer to all of your problems lies in garden border edging.

In this article, I will share great ways in which lawn edges can improve the overall aesthetics of your garden space all the while maximizing your comfort and functionality.

Are you ready to completely transform your front or back garden? Read on!

How to Improve your Garden with Lawn Edging

First Things First

Before you even begin with your redesign, you first want to consider how to zone your garden. How many areas can comfortably fit?

How are you planning to use the space? Maybe you’d like to have a small dining area just broad enough to invite a couple of friends over or create a private oasis to meditate or quietly read a book away from the noises of the streets and the demands of your home life.

Make your vision crystal clear, then proceed with your redesign accordingly.

As per materials, there are endless options to obtain clearly defined lawn edges. Depending on what is available to you, your personal taste, and the architecture of your garden, you may opt for flowerbed edges, brick, stone, to multi-material (plastic, metal, etc) strips specifically crafted for this purpose.

The website offers a broad range of options I have found particularly useful. Let’s take a better look at four of my favorite options for a garden redesign.

Garden Edging Option Number 1: Edging Hoops

If a natural look is what you are going for, edging hoops will give your garden that down-to-earth, homey feel.

They are fairly easy to install and allow for a softer shape, which is why they are often used to edge bushes and flowers.

They come in a wide range of designs, and the best part you can even overlap them to create unique patterns that very much feel like works of art.

Depending on the individual characteristics of your garden, the hoop approach is best reserved for one or two of your outdoor zones as it can end up looking slightly “messy” otherwise.

Garden Edging Option Number 2: Plastic or Metal Lawn Edgers

If you are a lover of a perfectly polished and neatly defined look, I might have just the right thing for you.

In fact, metal or plastic edging is there to satisfy your every need. I particularly love this option as it allows for that immaculate manicured aesthetic all the while spacing out trimming times.

As much as I love tending to my garden, trimming every few days can be daunting at times!

The materials employed in your lawn edging need to be high-quality (you can find good examples here) as they will need to stand the test of time and be resilient in all-season conditions.

Plastic and aluminum are durable, affordable options preferred by many landscapers and garden enthusiasts.

The installation process is fairly straightforward but may require some time depending on the perimeter to cover.

Also, some dividers might come with sharp edges, meaning you might even need gloves to avoid minor scratches and cuts as you set things up.

Garden Edging Option Number 3: Rocks

Possibly the most rustic approach to lawn edging, rocks allow for a natural visual effect that also gives your garden a manicured look.

Common materials employed in this practice are sandstone, granite, and limestone among others.

Depending on the dominant colour palette of your outdoor space, you may opt for a natural stone colour or painted stones. You can even choose to combine the two!

If you do opt for artificially coloured rocks, beware that the paint may fade or chip away over time, especially if you live in a damp or otherwise harsh-weathered area.

Garden Edging Option Number 4: Paving

Lovers of Japanese garden art are no strangers to the practice of paving. You can opt for a minimalist look by simply laying flat boards down to the ground, or expressing your creativity through unusual and charming patterns.

The final design should aim to elevate your beautiful flowerbeds, bushes and, why not, even water features.

The Bottom Line

Your garden area is as important as any indoor space in your house. Making it beautiful all the while maintaining high standards of privacy, comfort, and functionality doesn’t need to be hard.

With a few tricks, you can quickly elevate your patio look without spending a fortune.

Happy landscaping!
