The bath and shower product category comes with a diverse variety of different formulas, textures, types and scents. But, there is one particular product that tends to raise the most questions, and that is shower oil. So, in this blog post, we’ll clear up the confusion.
What is shower oil?
Unlike what many think, shower oil is not a moisturiser. It’s a type of body cleanser that also has great moisturising properties, due to its higher oil content than typical shower gels. When it comes to contact with water, this oil emulsifies and turns into a light, milky texture, ideal for gently cleansing the skin without removing its protective barrier. This makes it an excellent option for those who struggle with dryness, although it’s suitable for most skin types.
What really differentiates shower oils is their luxurious feel. Many of the higher-end options, such as Sabon gentle shower oil, are enriched with natural botanical oils, such as jojoba, avocado, olive, wheat germ or almond, nourishing your skin and leaving it feeling like silk. They also come in a range of beautiful scents, from delicate jasmine to citrus blossom, subtly lingering throughout the day. It’s almost like having a spa experience from your own bathroom, even if for a brief moment.
How to use shower oil properly
Using a shower oil is straightforward but there are a few tips to help you get the best results:
- Start with warm water: Like with any other shower routine, begin with warm (not hot) water. Using overly hot water can strip your skin’s natural oils, in turn causing more dryness.
- Apply to wet skin: Shower oils are designed to be used on wet skin, so they can react to water and emulsify naturally (it should turn milky).
- Massage gently: Spend a minute or so massaging the oil into your skin, focusing on dry areas such as elbows or knees.
- Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the oil off fully with water. Your skin should feel clean but not tight or dry.
- Pat dry: After your shower, dry your body with a towel using a patting motion, instead of rubbing. This helps lock in the moisture from the oil.
- Moisturise: If you want to use an additional body moisturiser or lotion, now is the time to do it, while your skin is still slightly damp. However, this is an option step, depending on your skin’s dryness and preferences.
When to use shower oil
Shower oils can be used daily, replacing your usual shower wash. They are especially great for people struggling with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, as normal cleansers tend to irritate them. If you have a specific skin condition, it’s always a good idea to patch-test a new product first.
For those who don’t want to use a shower oil every single day, it can be particularly beneficial in specific situations. For instance, during the winter months, when the cold weather and dry indoor heating tend to take moisture out of the skin. Similarly, using it after sun exposure in the summer can help restore and rehydrate stressed skin gently.
Finding what’s right for you
There is no answer on whether or not shower oil is the right product for you – that’s something everyone has to figure out for themselves. It all comes down to your skin type and, ultimately, your personal preferences.
