It can be exciting and scary to start a new workout routine. This is especially true if it’s your first time going to Pilates class and you don’t know what to expect.

Focusing on controlled breathing, posture, and movements, Pilates is a great way to get stronger in your core and more flexible.

To help you feel more prepared and confident, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about pilates classes before stepping onto the mat.

1. Wear the Right Clothing

Dress comfortably, but don’t wear clothes that are too big or too loose. This will make it hard for your teacher to see your posture.

For Pilates, you should wear a fitted top with leggings or shorts. Fabrics that let air pass through them help you stay cool in class.

You don’t need shoes, but grip socks can help you stay on your feet. While you’re lying down, don’t wear clothes with zippers or buttons because they will rub against your body.

2. Pack Essential Items

If the class is long, bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Although some studios provide mats, it is recommended that you bring your own for comfort and cleanliness reasons. You can also wipe off sweat with a small towel or use it as support.

Tie back your long hair to keep it out of your face. Also, bring your grip socks if the studio asks for them. Having your Pilates gear ready in a simple bag makes it easier to stick with your routine.

3. Arrive Early

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for class. This gives you time to calm down, find a good spot, and, if you’re new, talk to your teacher.

You might feel stressed if you rush to get to class. When you get there early, your body and mind have time to relax before you start working out.

4. Learn Basic Pilates Terms and Moves

It can be easier to follow along in class if you know words like “core,” “neutral spine,” and “tabletop position.”

To see how the moves look, read online guides or watch short videos. This helps you figure out how the session is going.

Getting used to basic positions can help you feel more confident, especially when you’re in a group class. Even though teachers will help you, it’s helpful to learn ahead of time.

5. Listen to Your Body

Pilates isn’t about speed; it’s about control. Pay attention to your body and know when to take a break. Tell your teacher or take a short break if something hurts or is too hard. Moves can always be changed.

Don’t judge other people by their speed; everyone moves at their own pace. Be aware of how you feel to protect your body and get better over time.

Stay Committed and Enjoy the Journey

Whether you’re just starting or looking to deepen your practice, staying mindful of these tips can help you grow stronger, more flexible, and more confident over time.

So, stay committed and enjoy the journey—your body will thank you with every move.
