5 Benefits of Independent Living Communities

Noticing your parents need a little more help at home is always a worrying sign. However, if remaining living at home isn’t an option for them or something they don’t want to do, independent living communities could be the perfect option.

They are a supportive environment that helps seniors live their lives as they wish, but with the added bonus of being an environment that is safe, with additional help on hand if they need it.

It’s not an easy decision, but if you’re looking into this option for your parents, here are just a few benefits moving to independent living can offer its residents.

Social Connection

Living alone can get lonely, and seniors, especially, are at risk of becoming isolated with no one to check on them or offer support when needed.

One of the most obvious benefits of an independent living community is that residents can live their lives as they wish, but have the added benefit of others around them they can engage with, join classes, group outings, and other social activities. All of which are beneficial for anyone, not just the senior community.

Maintenance Free Living

One of the main differences between living independently in a single-family dwelling or in an independent living community is the lack of maintenance. This will all be taken care of, and they’ll not need to maintain buildings, mow lawns, shovel snow, etc.

And while the facilities may vary from location to location, typically these jobs are taken care of as standard in independent living communities, with some extras on offer too, like laundry or housekeeping services you can use, potentially for an extra charge, but it’s there if needed.

Convenience

Communities such as this often have everything on site. They’ll bring it all together so you don’t need to go anywhere if you don’t want to, and can access things like:

  • On-site salons
  • Wellness programmes
  • Banking facilities
  • Stores
  • Swimming pools
  • Transportation services
  • Fitness classes

Dining Options

The majority of independent living communities will have a range of different meal options on-site. From stores you can purchase healthy foods in to meal services that can be delivered to diners in restaurants, cafés, or bistros. What exactly is on offer will depend on the specific community, but alongside general dining options, you might find communities host happy hours, cooking demonstrations, and other special events if cooking in their home doesn’t suit.

Safety and Security

One thing that is often a worry for older people is safety and security. What happens if they have an accident at home? Or are they safe from crime? Independent living is the best of both worlds as far as this is concerned.

They get to live alone on their own property, but they have the safety of on-site security and neighbours who can help in the event that something happens.

Plus, many communities have added features like emergency response systems and on-site staff available 24/7, so if anything were to happen, they can access help immediately instead of waiting for someone to find them.
